A memorial service will be held at Bass Point Reserve to mark the anniversary of the Cities Service Boston shipwreck. Thirty three members of the 6 Machine Gun Battalion (AIF), camped at Kembla Grange at the time, were called on to lead the rescue mission, and were joined by many members of the local community who ran from their nearby homes to assist.

As the last rescue of the day was being attempted, a large wave struck a group of ten Australian soldiers and sailors working on the rope washing them all into the water. Three soldiers were rescued by their comrades while three others managed to clamber ashore, however four disappeared in the water.

Each year, members of the 6 Machine Gun Battalion AIF Association, their families and many of the locals who remember the night gather at Bass Point on the third Sunday in May to commemorate the tragedy.
